Now, the Sea of Fallen Stars has already been covered by several supplements, I haven't yet seen much about the ships of the rest of the continent. What sort of ships to they use on the Sword Coast? Maztica mentions caravels, but that was some time ago. Has the smokepowder revolution reached the seas yet (which is pretty much a prerequisite for the construction of galleons)? What is popular and potent on the seas? Do the major princes build themselves navies, or do they press merchant ships?

Just wondering...

There's a chapter in the 2e Pirates of the Fallen Stars tome which covers the details surrounding vessels used in the Sea of Fallen Stars.

Additionally, most of the regional books that deal with locations that have shores or access to inland water bodies in the Realms make mention of the various types of water craft used in such places. For example, Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast references cogs, caravels, and various types of cargo ships as popular for use along the coast and the 2e Moonsea supplement details galleons and other vessel types as the ships frequently used on the Moonsea.

Details about the formation and operation of local and/or national navies are almost always included in those tomes I've talked about above.
