hey my fellow scribes and sages,

has anyone ever tried out the item familiar option listed in unearthed arcana, Pages 170 through 174? I became intrigued with this subject after another thread on these boards, about a staff for a familiar, listed in a previous dragon magazine article. Rather than a traditional animal/ creature type, I thought this might spark some interest.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or otherwise?

yeah, I did...it got to be really powerful if you also enchant the familiar..I had a staff familiar with weapon inhancements to battle other spellcastors...if you pick the right feats it can be pretty brutal

it is also to drop on a player when they are expecting a typical intelligent magical item

the question I always have is can you make your item familiar your ancestral relic (using the ancestral relic feat from the Book of Exalted Deeds)...if you can it gets really broken (I used that rule on my staff once)

I too was thinking of a staff, but I am wanting to take it in a direction not normally used. Maybe a small ship with magical properties, a ring, helm, shield, heck how about a pipe. I think the option has some good uses and does not appear to be too out of balance.

The wizard staff in dragon magazine has some great options. The problem I see with an unusual item, like a boat or whatbot, to have the same properties becomes kinda redundant in specific environments.

For example, if you take a pipe that has to be lit in order to actually function, what will you do under water? A small ship same problem if you play in an area that is not surrounded with a body of water. A boat would be great in a Venice-type of town-setting, but otherwise, I'm not sure. It would be great but with the dragon's option the staff becomes a vehicle for some of the wizards power. What intelligent wizard would put a portion of his power into an item he cannot always use?

Ring, helm/hat, could work although some aspects of the wizard staff would have to be altered, since I cannot imagine a wizard waving his hat around to deliver touch attacks... well, I *can* imagine such a thing, but who would take the wizard serious?
If you wanna make a unique wizard's staff, turn it into a rowing oar, a wizard running around with a 15 foot+ long oar to use as a staff would be fun to watch, even though the wizard will most certainly have problems in any room of less than 17 foot height.

It, the option, does have some good uses, but you should always consider practicality.

Cheers
