Somehow I managed to steer clear of learning too many details of Cale's early life despite reading the Erevis Cale Trilogy and Shadowbred, so it was nice to read a bit more about Cale's life in the Night Mask's in Westgate. I was a bit surprised that Cale was caught skimming coins from operations, as he struck me as a decidedly, well, not overly greedy theif, if that makes any sense.
After reading the story though, and seeing how Cale was looking to fill the void in his life, it makes sense. Not so much that gold would fill his void or even that he thought that purchasing things would help, but more or less because the challenge of stealing from the Night Mask's themselves might give him some fulfillment.
While Jak's involvement with the Harpers and Riven's involvement with the Zhentarim weren't surprises for me, the way that Cale found out about both of their affiliations was very interesting, and in the end, I really liked the agreement that Cale and Erevis reached at the end, as it made perfect sense for everything that had happened.
The tension between Cale and Tazi and the relationship between Cale and Thamalon were very interesting to see, since they are referenced in the later books, but not fleshed out as much. Its nice to see the determining factors in a lot of what makes Cale tick at this point in time.
Much as I liked the story, Jak wasn't quite as much fun as he was in the Cale trilogy, but I think he definately came into his own in that series. I loved Cale slapping Riven on the back and Riven calling him a bastard. Classic.
While it obviously sets up the story for Cale's book, the ending of this one felt much less like a prologue to the book than just a short story establishing the characters. |

| Been a while since I read this, so I'll settle for mentioning that Cale didn't skim the coins to enrich himself per se, see (I think it is) Another Name For Dawn. |
There is a rumour going around that I have found god. I think is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys, and there is empirical evidence that they exist.

It's from Dragon. Can't recall the number of the issue though - although I made a list of the Dragon short-stories in a stickied thread, so look there . |

Not quite on this topic, but perhaps relevent to those who come upon this same thoguht-line...
Does anyone have any ideas how to obtain a copy of that story? Paizo no longer has copies of issue 277 in print. The electronic (PDF) version has a warning on the page they it excludes this story.
From what I've seen posted by many, over and over again, this is a very good story with some good detail on Cale's history. It would be quite a sad loss to see it fall-off into the void of history.

| You know, given the history of the the "Best of the Realms" anthologies, perhaps we'll see a Paul S Kemp one eventually. I've noticed that he has written quite a few short stories for Dragon. I think that Paul and RLB are both due for these, provided they have enough short stories for the whole thing. |

UPDATE:
I sought out an answer from Paul Kemp the other day, via a post to his web-blog. After looking into this, he has posted a response that the story should be appearing on the WOTC website sometime in the future (Thanks Mr. Kemp!). So, for those who haven't had the opportunity to read this story, keep an eye out!
