I was thinking about these articles during philosophy class today. These articles detail the Wyrm's history, stats, lair, and details whether they have any unique spells which they may employ. The articles also suggest a selection of advice on what the fate of the particular Wyrm covered in the article should be. These Wyrms seem to be well constructed, unique and worthwhile conversions from 2e. They also seem perfect for any mid-to-high level campaign encounters.

I guess what I am really asking is - As DM's (or to a lesser extent, players), do you make use of these materials, or am I alone in using them?. I am also looking for general comments on what you think about the articles in general, whether you like, or dislike them, and so forth...

For those of who who don't know what I am talking about, the Wyrms of the North articles are located here. Simply click on a particular Wyrm in the archive to read about past Wyrms which have been posted.

indeed, the wyrms of the north section @wizards is the one i always hope has had a new addition every time i check out the site. extremely well done, and laid out in extreme detail that would make any dm wish for a high level campaign to use these dragons. unfortunately i haven`t had the delight to throw any of them at my players yet, perhaps some of them could be used as a behind-the-scenes BBEG for 20 levels or so? would be fun (or i could use Creepy, just to be sure that those that play human characters die of old age before they have a chance to actually stand up to him, oh well, they would die either way, and i thing I for one would prefer old age to creepy)

I wont find myself using the Wyrms of the North article, simply because I never feature dragons in my campaign as I deem them as far too powerful and imposing. They take a great deal of role-playing from a DM's point of view (not that im saying Im not up for that task, far from it) but the nearest my players have ever got to a dragon is the glimpse of one flying overhead (purely for the pleasure of seeing them panic and run for the trees )

I used the Wyrms articles extensively when creating my North timeline as they often contained bits and pieces which I could fit and shape for the good of the whole.

I always thought they were a fabulous read - one of the few reasons I continued buying Dragon during that time period.

No offence taken - it's not my product. I don't write products for WotC, and will never be approached to do so. I think I may have burned my bridges a long time ago ...

The product in question isn't announced, and the reference is a little one - but FR scholars will appreciate the tie-in.

Not your product, no, but you never seem to fail to mention when you've worked on something. I'd be the same way, I'm sure . . . .

Which, I suppose, is part of the reason I was ribbing you . . .

I have as a player,as I am not the DM.I like "Wyrms of the North".

Courage isn't the lack of fear but rather believing in and doing what you know is right even though fear is present.

It would be nice. I also hope they intend to put most of the Perilous Gateways articles into PDF as well, since I use some of the material presented in those articles for Planes/FR adventures. It would make it easier to reference, instead of the multitude of printouts that I currently have scattered about everywhere.

Yes,I guess your right about the Perilous Gateways but I haven't
planned on using any of it yet.I suppose I am too simple minded to
think that far ahead.

I actually make homemade pdf's of everything on the WotC site for easy reference (and if they are ever taken down). If you have a full version of Acrobat, all you need to do is do "open webpage," and copy the url in for the printer friendly version of the article. Bam, you now have your own pdf copy. They sometimes require a little cleanup, but not much. And you have to compile the full article (say, all the parts to a Perilous Gateways article) yourself. I'd pass them on, but having one of your friends get sued for copyright infringement makes one slightly paranoid about sharing stuff...

Actually, I just have a specialised folder of WotC site bookmarks that automatically link me to these feature articles...should I need to access them.

So far I haven't used any of the Wyrms articles in my PbeM campaigns, though I was about to in the Silver Marches PbeM campaign which is now on hold.

I might use some of the info from the articles in the Twilight Dawn PbeM however. The articles themselves are nice pieces of Realms history and trivia. Even without the conversion to 3(.5)E they are very usefull in that regard. Some new elements have been added it seems, but overall the original articles appear to have remained intact.

In the last article which appeared in Dragon Magazine(tm) showed a map of the sword coast with the roaming areas of the dragons. These areas didn't leave much space for other dragons to be inserted, without having 'frequent' territorial clashes between the various dragons. Of course younger dragons could be placed at random almost anywhere, but to add old, wyrm, and great wyrm dragons would be a challenge without having to add these 'battles'.

Yes, I remember that particular map.... I remember because I intended to use it as a player handout during one of my games, but unfortunately I lost that issue of Dragon Magazine before I could incorporate it.

I'll try looking for a back issue...Mumadar, if you could provide the issue number, and publishing month/year it would be a great help.

Thanks

Did a quick scan through the mags, but could only find the last of the articles in Dragon 259. Browsed through the ones immediately after, but couldn't find anything... #261 was missing... might have been the one...

Master Sage,

This is a great post right here, for sure! I definitely use articles like this. I run sandbox campaigns, and thus, I ensure that the area in play (usually about 3-4 million square miles) has all of the appropriate Realms "stuff" in play. Since I don't scale my campaigns by CR/EL, it helps for the realism to know that "as it is, it shall be" is a thing that characters know and can base their decisions upon, i.e. knowledgeable character determines that Voaraghamanthar is in the Mere of Dead Men, and that it is possibly a thing to encounter.....regardless of your party/character level: are you going to go in there?

It makes the Realms that much more believable I feel, and the players I've had in my campaigns for years agree: play the Realms as they would be, and that includes the big nasties such as the Wyrms of the North.

Best regards,
