Hi all. I've got an open-ended question for everyone that I'm curious to hear peoples' thoughts on.
Scenario: You are in the lore caverns of Oryndoll, the illithid City of Loretakers, whose vaults surpass even those of Candlekeep. You have a helm of telepathy, a perfect knowledge of the illithid filing system, and five minutes to plunder whatever lore you want before you have to make your escape. What lore do you study, which question(s) do you want answered?
This could either be for you, as a player and Realms fan, or from the perspective of one of your characters (or both!). Have fun!

I would search for Elminster's memoirs to find out if he wears boxers or briefs. |

I'm having a hard time answering this. Oryndoll has twelve thousand years of history behind it. So I think I'm going to need more than five minutes.
Or, failing that, some variant of a SageTime spell.

A complete listing of all things the illithids are afraid of. It could come in handy later on in any confrontation with the race, let them know that you know their fears & have no problem sending them to their own personal hell. Learn their taboos & how to use them against them.
If I still had any time left, I would delve into the Illithid religious systems. See if Ilsensine is their only deity & if so, were there ever any others in the past. Perhaps look for some rituals to Ilsensine & put them down on paper later on. |

This is such a cool topic, it really leads to some creative thinking.
Personally Id want to know more of the origins of the species itself. The characters I have typically played would have sought out secret caches of illithid treasures. The only epic character i ever played would have tried to find out how Ioulaum turned himself into a elder brain. |

1st off, if my PC & party are there on purpose, they'd have to have almost 2 million xp points each (2e speaking, so all members are at least 15th level in their main class). No point going a place that dangerous unprepared.
2nd, I figure there's no lore, even in the Realms, that is so far-fetched that the only place to find the secret to something would be in Oryndoll. If the person (player character) is destined to learn something, then dreams, visions and direct communion with their deity, or even planar/ethereal servants of the deity, would be a much more efficient way to obtain the lost lore in question. Of course much discipline would be required for it; or insanity, as those less talented folk observing the loreseeker would deem it in their various motives & dispositions.
So if my PC is in Oryndoll....well first off, he'd have made full provision for he & his party to be their nigh fully unseen & undetectable, and certainly immune to the mind blasts of the illithids (greenstone amulets & Chaotic Commands, FTW!).
Note: SPOILER ALERT: If you're interested in, but haven't yet, read Ed Greenwood's "Dark Warrior Rising," then please discontinue reading this post. I truly do not want to spoil one of Ed's finest works for you. End Note.
And once there, he's readying a spell ritual that's been YEARS in preparation. This spell would do two things: (1) is that he'd have found a way to bind the spirits that power up of the most powerful golems in the city (I wrote in another thread how golems are powered in my Realms), thus binding the golems to his command as if they were summoned creatures, and (2) summon GIANT purple worms to do my PC's bidding. from the deeper Underdark.
Stone, Clay, & Iron Golems have high magic resistance, and are taller than even ulitharids, so these I would get to engage the illithids & ulitharids in melee; a golem rampage, if you will.
The giant purple worms are summoned & controlled by the spell ritual to absolutely sack all the illithids, ulitharids, and elder brain within the city; they are to rip up buildings from their foundations, collapsing them (but doing so away from the thrall caverns). They'd also swallow the illithids & ulitharids whole; and when not doing that, they'd be crushing the illithids/ulitharids man-sized bodies under their 25-30' multi-tonned bodies as they slither their way into destroying edifice & mind flayer in their wake - not sparing the elder brain in their rampage either.
My PC wouldn't even be thinking about the lorebooks in Oryndoll, despite having a deep affinity for the books in the library of Candlekeep. |

You could try finding an in-game copy of The Illithiad, the summation of merchant-sage S. Wakeman's research on the illithid race.

Lost Empires of Faerūn tells us that following Ioulaum's conversion to lichdom in the dying days of Netheril [the lifedrain spells of the phaerimm having disrupted his other life-extending magicks] he left Netheril and went off to train a variety of apprentices, including illithids from the city of Ellyn'taal [presumed to be the first illithiliches]. Eventually he used his illithid students to create an undead elder brain and then merged himself with it. |

I suppose the smart course of action would be to learn how to remain undetected for longer than five minutes. Or, failing that, how to get the hell outta there without becoming brain food.
I'd be after any scrap of lore I could find which relates to the Gith races, of course. Probably quite a lot available.
I second Sage's mention of the Illithiad. Written for 2E but still the definitive source of Mind Flayer lore. |
