I just thought It'd be cool to have a thread on El's life from his affinitive hatred toward magic to his foray into hell. What are the highlights of his life for those who know it oh so well????

It would probably be a good idea to get Mr Greenwood's own thoughts on this as well. Perhaps the Lady Hooded One will grace this scroll with a few of the Great Sage's words on 'Elminster', that is, once his "busy period" has slowed down somewhat...

Various products/novels have detailed his past. What exact area are you interested in? |

Yes, more elaborate details will be required for us to properly ascertain what it is you are looking for. The history of Elminster is a particularly long and detailed tale, and there are many, many twists and turns...

For a generic answer, you could always check out the Elminster series of novels: "Elminster, Making of a Mage", "Elminster in Myth Drannor", "The Temptation of Elminster, "Elminster in Hell", and "Elminster's Daughter". You can also read The Shadow of the Avatars series: "Shadows of Doom", "Cloak of Shadows, and "All Shadows Fled".
But we may also be able to answer specific questions if you have those as well.

Have you made any progress on compiling some of Elminster's biographical information for a scroll here at Candlekeep, Myst?

I have read the entire Elminster series of novels, and enjoyed them all, but of course, Ed Greenwood has (no doubt deliberately) left many, many gaps in the history of the Old Mage. I am deeply interested in this character, and I find that older sources have a lot of interesting tidbits which are no longer discussed.
I, for one, would like to hear more about Arkhon "the Old", who is reputed to have taught Elminster magic at some point. I cannot recall any references to this character in the novels, but the original 'Hall of Heroes' says:
"Elminster's precise age is unknown . . . but he is at least 600 winters of age . . . This count of years is inescapable, given that he once had Arkhon "the Old" as a tutor,"
and
"He speaks of Arkhon "the Old," perhaps the foremost human sage (and a mage of note, too) in the North at the time, and it's suspected that he took tutelage under Arkhon in Waterdeep,"
This is an old source, and much of the information therein has been updated in newer sources. However, the manual for the original 'Baldur's Gate' computer roleplaying game reproduced this reference:
"From his tales, it is suspected that he learned his magical arts at the feet of Arkhon the Old, who died in what is now Waterdeep over 500 years ago,"
I am unsure as to the reliability of these sources, however, for the more widely accepted (but brief) history in the 'Heroes Lorebook' made no reference to Arkhon. It would be interesting to hear Ed's comments on this, and I would like to know if anyone has more detailed information on this.
Another interesting passage (from the Hall of Heroes) regarding Elminster's history:
". . . and probably also learned the rudiments of an adventuring mage's art through his contacts (the merchants and "fences" of goods from the past) in the caravan city of Scornubel."
I would also like to hear more on Alais, the 'elven lady' with whom he left Myth Drannor (after the events of 'Elminster in Myth Drannor', I believe) "to begin an epic travel about the Realms to learn its lands and lore." (Hall of Heroes) The details of these far-ranging travels and their relationship would be another interesting and important episode in the Old Mage's life - especially considering that when he returned from Evermeet (Alais "remained, to pass away,") he was "changed in outlook in humor,".
The references to his study "under the tutelage of such mages as Torose and Shalane of Taerloon" are also interesting, and I would like to hear more of this.
All this stuff seems pretty obscure, and I have had great difficulty in unearthing any more information on these topics. The sources in which I read this information are old and few. If anyone does indeed know more, please share this knowledge with us all. Otherwise, our only hope for greater insight is Ed Greenwood himself. |

I would advise all of the elminster specific novels, as the source of info you are looking for. It covers him from a young warrior to a thief, cleric, female, mage, mystra's consort, to a chosen. A thousand + years of his life in realms lore awaits you my friend. various other novels feature elmister as well. |

As I said, having read the Elminster series (from 'Making of a Mage' through to 'Elminster's Daughter'), along with the "Shadows" trilogy, and having reviewed the 3rd Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and Epic Level Handbook, I still cannot find the information above. Is there anyone who can shed any light on these topics?
I haven't been able to get my hands on Dragon Magazine 110/30, which features the article "All About Elminster" - perhaps that might help. Has anyone here read this? |

Solomon I guess I should have elaborated my post to be to sure to include who I was responding to.
Myst If you have not read these fine novels check them out. It will give you a good (brief) overview of Elminster and his life |
