I've yet to run across a mage in any Realms novel or short story I've read that has a familiar. I'm surprised, seeing as almost every one of these stories is filled to the brim with archmages and the like.
Were familiars never intended to be a part of the Realms? Or is this just a coincidence?

There is a mage with a familiar in the following novels/short stories that I know of (I'm sure there's more):
-In book 1, maybe 2 (possibly in the entire series, I am not sure as I have not yet finished it) of the Cleric Quintet by Salvatore
-In a short story in Realms of Shadow (anthology of short stories). I'm afraid I don't remember the author, but it's a fantastic story, I highly recommend it. The main character is a judge of sorts who is tied quite strongly to his familiar.
-And, the most famous example I can think of, Gromph Baenre and his rat (whose name eludes me at the moment).
Those are just off the top of my head. I'm certain there's more. |

There's a wizard with a familiar in Rich Baker's novel City of Ravens, I believe. He read a brilliantly written, gloriously funny passage involving this duo at last year's GenCon.
My villain in The Shattered Mask has a demon servant that attends him and does his bidding. That qualifies as a familiar according to the definition you'll find in various reference works on witchcraft, diabolism, and all that. But the entity in my story isn't the standard rat, toad, pseudo-dragon, or what have you provided for by the rules of D&D. |

Is there anyway to script some kind of "spoiler tag"? I've seen it on another board; all you need to type is "[ spoiler ]text[ /spoiler ]" (without the spaces). The text that shows up is something like this:

| In pool of darkness the mage Eviane had a familiar called Gamaliel who was a giant cat that could shape change into a human barbarian, and the other female mage whose name i cant even think of has a magical horse. Also there a few other stories where the main character walks by and interacts with others that have familiars, like in "The lost library of Cormanthyr'" and the Moonshaes trilogies. |
